Over the past few months around 200 hundreds students from engineering faculties in PS visited the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre ,during these visits eng. Hatem wahsh and Walaa’ Ajaj from the center presented several lectures and gave explanation detailed talk on the facilities which the center possesses. The students participated in several demonstrations by using the seismometer, which measures the natural frequency of soil and buildings. As well the Seismograph, this is used to examine the layers and depth of the soil, in addition to quality and strength of the rocks in these layers.
Mr. Walaa’ Ajaj from the Center gave explanation detailed talk on the facilities which the Center possesses. Mr. Ajaj demonstrated to the students the Seismometer, which measures the natural frequency of soil and buildings. He also showed students the Seismograph, which is used to examine the layers and depth of the soil, in addition to quality and strength of the rocks in these layers.
Afterwards, the students visited the unit’s samples and models lab, where they were introduced to the Shaking table, using it to model the capacity of buildings to withstand seismic vibrations.
1. The Center of Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction is part of An-Najah’s Scientific Center – home to 7 Centers.
2. The SASPARM Project aims to educate and spread the public awareness on earthquakes’ risks, increasing the capacity building and decreasing the seismic Vulnerability of buildings.
4. The Project is sponsored by the EU within the FP7 projects and in partnership with the European Centre for Seismic Engineering and IUSS University Pavia, Italy.
5. Seismometers and Seismographs were purchased by An-Najah through the SASPARM project.
