On 20 October 2014, four groups of students from various engineering departments visited the Urban Planning and Disaster Risk Reduction Centre/ Earth Sciences and Seismic Engineering Unit at An-Najah University. The visit gave the students the opportunity to expand their knowledge about earthquakes and seismic risk mitigation as well as try out the lab equipment.
Mr. Wala Ajaj, representing the unit, welcomed the students and gave them an overview on the Centre. He showed them the equipment available at the Unit which was purchased as part of the SASPARM project and how to use theis equipment (including data aquisition and data analysis) .
The students also visited the Lab of Models and Samples, where they were introduced to the Shaking Table, which is used in modeling scenarios and conducting dynamic studies. They were also briefed on the different types of stone and ways of using stone with concrete in construction.
- The visit was part of the Seismic Risk Mitigation Project (SASPARM- FP7), funded by the EU.
- The visiting groups included each of Building Engineering, Civil Engineering and Disaster Risk Reduction Course students; the course including all University disciplines except Engineering students.
